In Odesa, the SBU detained a Moldovan citizen who was trying to smuggle armor plates and tactical equipment from Ukraine to Transnistria. Law enforcement officers seized almost half a thousand armor plates and more than two hundred tile carriers that were planned to be smuggled across the border under the guise of household goods.

This is stated in the decision of the Peresypskyi District Court of Odesa.

The SBU exposed a large-scale scheme of illegal supply of military equipment to the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic. The central figure in the case is a citizen of Moldova, who has already been chosen as a measure of restraint in the form of detention.

According to the investigation, the conspiracy arose at the beginning of the year. The foreigner did not act independently - he was instructed by a high-ranking representative of the "Ministry of Defense" OF THE TRANSNISTRIAN REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA. His goal was to supply armor plates and tactical equipment to Tiraspol. To do this, he began looking for accomplices and establishing procurement channels.

The key moment was the agreement with the Kyiv-based company Smart Space Interiors. Through the popular online retailer, he contacted the supplier and purchased a large batch of security equipment: 472 metal armor plates and 259 tile carriers. The seller was found to be unaware of the customer's true intentions.

To conceal the goods, the suspect rented a warehouse near Kyiv, where the armor was delivered. Then he planned to transport the cargo to Transnistria. The scheme was well thought out: the equipment was to be hidden among household goods and transported in small batches in a Toyota Sequoia across the state border of Ukraine.

The organizer involved another Moldovan citizen, who was well versed in customs procedures, in the criminal activity. He was supposed to ensure unimpeded border crossing.

However, the plan failed to materialize. On March 13, 2025, the SBU in Odesa region detained the organizer during a special operation. On the same day, law enforcement officers searched a rented warehouse. The entire batch of equipment was found there: armored plates labeled "Miilux Protection 500" of the 4th class of protection and camouflaged tile carriers.

The following day, the detainee was served a notice of suspicion under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - illegal handling of weapons and ammunition, preparation for a crime, participation in a criminal conspiracy, and violation of the rules for international transfers of military goods.

The Odesa court ruled to take the suspect into custody for 60 days and set a bail of over UAH 1.5 million.

The involvement of the detainee and his accomplices in other channels of supply of military equipment to Transnistria is currently being checked. He faces up to seven years in prison.

In July, border guards of the Izmail detachment prevented an attempt to smuggle a large batch of goods through a checkpoint in Odesa region. They tried to smuggle the cargo as humanitarian aid without declaring it.
