On February 27, the Zhovten Cinema will host the premiere of the investigative documentaryWhen Water Cries Out, created by journalists from The Kyiv Independent.

As the publication reported on its social media page, the film explores the events after the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant in June 2023, especially the situation in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson region.

The journalists collected more than 50 testimonies from eyewitnesses, volunteers, and relatives of the victims. They concluded that the real number of civilian casualties is much higher than the official figures, and the burial places of many people remain unknown.

The investigation shows that the occupation authorities did not organize the evacuation of the victims. The occupation "governor" Vladimir Sald, the head of the occupation government Andrei Alekseenko and the Russian Emergencies Ministry General Ivan Pavlenko are called responsible for this. They claimed that the evacuation was not necessary, and that the rescue buses were leaving empty.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the authors. Pre-registration is required, the number of seats is limited.

Earlier, Intent wrote that the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant caused billions of dollars in losses, and the restoration of the plant and new water supply alternatives remain a subject of debate among experts.

Ecologists also reported that a unique forest of young willow trees, covering more than 65,000 hectares, had formed at the bottom of the former Kakhovka reservoir. The tallest trees have already reached a height of five meters, demonstrating a record growth rate due to rich black soil and favorable climatic conditions.

On the night of June 6, Russians blew up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. At least 34 people were killed and 28 others were injured. Almost 40 people are missing. People and pets were evacuated from 3 flooded areas.

Int'l correspondent Albina Karman reported on the evacuation of people from the flooded areas.
