The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to transfer the Odesa Law Academy to the I. Mechnikov Odesa National University.

This was reported by MP Mariana Bezuhla.

"By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Kivalov Law Academy was transferred to the Odesa National University named after I. Mechnikov," the MP said in a statement.

Intent contacted the press service of the Odesa Law Academy for comment, but they hung up on him.

The website of the Ministry of Education and Science explained that the decision to merge the educational institutions is part of the overall policy of modernizing higher education in Odesa.

They also assured that this decision would not affect students. All those who study at the Odesa Law Academy will continue their studies in the same programs they were enrolled in, and the budget places and the cost of contracts will remain the same. As early as 2025, the universities will begin to gradually merge their programs.

A special commission will be set up to transfer property and coordinate the work of the new university. Importantly, the rights of faculty members of both universities are preserved, with the exception of senior positions such as rector and vice-rectors.

Odesa Law Academy was separated from Mechnikov University back in 1997. Now the government has decided to bring the law programs back to the classical university, which is a common practice in Europe.

One of the reasons for this reorganization is changes in the number of students. In recent years, there have been significantly fewer students per university, so the government is merging universities to improve the quality of education and attract investment to improve the educational infrastructure.
