In Voznesensk, the city budget allocated UAH 1.5 million to purchase apartments for internally displaced persons. The project is presented as a successful cooperation with philanthropists, but it has its own nuances: the city buys housing in poor condition, hoping for financial assistance from international partners to restore it.
This became known during a session of the Voznesensk City Council.
Mayor Yevhen Velychko admitted that last year Voznesensk failed to take full advantage of the opportunities - the quota for eight apartments was not fully utilized. This year, the city received a similar limit and plans to use budget funds to buy out three objects that the mayor calls 'bare boxes' without heating.
The fate of this housing depends entirely on the charity organization Caritas, which has previously agreed to allocate up to $29,500 for the repair of each property.
"We need to take the actual "bare boxes" and Caritas will make repairs there. It is important that this housing will have a special purpose - for IDPs," commented Yevhen Velychko on the strategy of the mayor's office.
Despite the fact that the city already has successful examples of such restoration (on Barvinkova and Myrna streets), the question of the speed of implementation remains open. So far, the executive committee is only preparing to vote on the allocation of previously repaired households for resettlement.
While communities are trying to solve the issue of permanent housing by attracting donors, Mykolaiv region continues to rely on temporary solutions - there are currently 65 modular houses for IDPs in the region.
