Greenpeace Ukraine has predicted which cities could be under water by the end of the century due to a one-meter rise in water levels as a result of global warming.
Yevheniia Zasiadko, the head of Greenpeace Ukraine, told the Telegraph newspaper in an interview.
According to her, Hola Prystan is among the top cities with the highest risk of flooding - 75%. Berdiansk, 30%, Skadovsk - 20%, Odesa - 17%, Kherson - 13%, Mykolaiv - 9%, Mariupol - 8%. Sevastopol will also be flooded by 4%. Chornomorsk by 2%. Yalta is also affected, but by less than 1%.
There is also a possibility that Shcholkine and Vilkovo in the Danube Delta, the "Ukrainian Venice," will also be flooded. She also emphasized that in 2015, the Paris Agreement stipulated that humanity must do everything possible by 2050 to prevent critical scenarios. However, it should be understood that the time to act is not 2049. Emissions should be reduced every 10 years, but this has not actually happened. The environmentalist also said that the goal of keeping warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius is now practically unattainable.
The Ecodia NGO in Ukraine conducted a study called "Water is Close," where it modeled that approximately one million hectares of the country's territory would be flooded.
"The entire coastal territory of Ukraine will be partially flooded. This includes agricultural land, settlements, industrial zones and other areas. To be more specific, 1 million 168 thousand hectares, including 212 thousand hectares of agricultural areas, 35 thousand hectares of built-up areas. It even includes military training grounds, because there are areas close to the sea," says the head of Greenpeace.
In October, the Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergencies (TES&E) at the Odesa City Council identified the districts and streets of the city that are at the highest risk of flooding following the September 30 floods.
