Environmental damage caused by a hit to an Odesa high-rise building was estimated at 18 million

Specialists of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southwestern District investigated the consequences of damage to a multi-storey residential building in Odesa due to Russian shelling on the night of May 1.

According to the inspectorate's press service, the specialists examined the scene and found that the land plots with a total area of more than 300 square meters were contaminated.

The amount of damage was estimated at almost 18 million hryvnias, and the information was transferred to the Operational Headquarters of the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine to create a unified register of environmental damage caused by armed aggression.

Instead, the inspectorate's experts listed the total damage caused by the May 1 shelling. On May 12, the inspectorate reported that the total area of the fire caused by the shelling was about 3,000 square meters. The fire released almost 240 tons of carbon dioxide into the air. The damage was estimated at over 700 thousand hryvnias.

However, on May 6, experts reported that the fire area was 6,000 square meters, and almost 500 tons of carbon dioxide were released into the atmosphere. The damage was estimated at over UAH 1.4 million.

At the time, the attack resulted in residential buildings being hit and local residents being killed. High-rise buildings, private houses, a supermarket, a school and cars were damaged in the city. Fires broke out in some places.

The press service of Ukrzaliznytsia reported that a railroad worker was killed in his home during the attack in Odesa, and that one of the railroad sections was damaged: tracks, a contact network, and three freight cars were damaged.

The Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office has launched a war crime investigation into Russia's nighttime attack on Odesa. The drone strike killed two people and injured 15 others. A high-rise building, other residential buildings, an educational institution, a supermarket and a car were damaged.
