Croatian police have detained Ukrainian national Volodymyr Zhuravlev, who is suspected of blowing up the "Nord Stream" pipelines. The arrest took place near the filming location of the movie "Snake Island" in the Odesa region.
This was reported by the publication LTO.
Germany accuses Zhuravlev of possibly being one of the divers who attached explosive devices to the pipelines in the Baltic Sea from a sailboat at a depth of approximately 80 meters.
He had previously been detained in Poland, but a court there released him and refused to extradite him to Germany.
According to media reports, the arrest took place near the Croatian city of Pula, where thefilm “Snake Island,” starring Hollywood actors Sean Penn and Adrien Brody, is currently being filmed. The film’s director is American Doug Liman, known for “The Bourne Identity.”
According to media reports, the film’s plot is inspired by the events surrounding the 2022 “Nord Stream” explosion and will tell the story of a secret team of Ukrainian divers who embark on a dangerous underwater mission amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
Filming began in Croatia in early August—first in Zagreb, and later moved to the coast, presumably for the diving scenes.
Explosions occurred on the Russian “Nord Stream” and “Nord Stream 2” gas pipelines in September 2022. As a result, three of the four branches of the pipelines connecting Russia to Germany were damaged. While investigating the case, Germany issued a series of arrest warrants for Ukrainians suspected of involvement in this special operation.
In 2025, Italy detained one of the suspects in this case, Serhiy K. He was later extradited to Germany.
