The number of lyceums in Mykolaiv may be reduced due to the outflow of students

In Mykolaiv, due to the lack of students, the number of lyceums may be reduced as required by law.

The head of the city's education department , Hanna Lychko, spoke about this during a live broadcast .

The number of tenth grade classes in lyceums has been reduced to 61, with 1857 students. Previously, there were 74 classes with 2297 students. This is due to the fact that the current network of lyceums is too large for the city, as the number of students has decreased. This is in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On Education," which clearly defines which educational institutions can be lyceums. At the same time, members of the city council appealed to the Verkhovna Rada to make an exception for frontline cities such as Mykolaiv and not to reduce the number of institutions. Lychko expressed hope that after the war ends, some children will return to the city.

As a reminder, the city is currently experiencing a large-scale outflow of students. This year, 11,000 fewer first-graders will start school than last year. At the same time, the number of parents choosing full-time or blended learning for their children has increased. While last year 51% of students chose this format, this year this figure has increased to 69%. The remaining 31% of students continue to study fully remotely. According to the official, each parent makes this decision independently.

The number of students is decreasing among both the youngest and the oldest. This year, 2411 students are planning to enter the first grade , while by February 2022, there were 4533 students. The situation is similar in the 10th grade: instead of 74 classes with 2297 students, there are now 61 classes with 1857 students.
