Russian planes attacked aircraft carriers on Zmeinyi Island with missiles at night

Zmeinyi Island, located in the Odesa region, was targeted by Russian aircraft at night.

According to the South Operational Command, on the night of August 24, Russian Tu-22M3 long-range bombers attacked southern Ukraine, firing four X-22 cruise missiles at the island.

Yesterday, on August 23, 2024, the air defense of southern Ukraine destroyed five reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles, including two ZALA and one Supercam, Orlan-10 and Merlin, as well as two Lancet strike UAVs.

The Kh-22 Burya is a family of Soviet supersonic long-range air-launched anti-ship missiles. The development of the basic version began in 1958, and missiles of various modifications were adopted in 1971-1976. The missile is launched from supersonic Tu-22 or Tu-22M strategic bombers (the missile and the aircraft form the K-22 air-to-air missile system), but other carriers were also developed: Tu-16, Tu-95. The missile is designed to destroy aircraft carriers and aircraft carrier strike groups with a nuclear (special) or high explosive (conventional) warhead.

In August 2023, the military returned the border sign on Zmiinyi Island to replace the one destroyed by the Russian military at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

In early July 2023, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Zmiinyi Island.

On July 20, 2022 , the Ukrainian military began demining the territory of Zmiinyi Island. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, samples of enemy weapons and equipment were found and seized. The military also found a cat on the island that had been there for several months and survived the enemy occupation and shelling.

On July 7, the Ukrainian military planted the national flag on the liberated Zmiinyi Island.

On June 30, Russians fled Zmiinyi after a week-long operation by the Ukrainian military.

On the night of June 27, Ukraine's diverse defense forces fired more than 10 times on Zmiinyi Island, including one hit on a Pantsyr-S1 anti-aircraft missile system.

The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kyrylo Budanov , said that the Ukrainian military will continue to strike at enemy positions on Zmiinyi until the island is completely liberated from Russians.

According to the military, a military operation is underway to destroy enemy forces and equipment on Zmeinyi Island. Another Pantsyr-S1 anti-aircraft missile and gun system was hit.

On June 22, the South Operational Command reported the first results of strikes on the enemy Russian garrison on Zmeinyi Island in Odesa Oblast.

Intelligence reported that the following were destroyed on the island: a Pantsyr S1 anti-aircraft missile system, a radar station, and vehicles.

On June 21, the South Operational Command reported that the Ukrainian armed forces had launched a concentratedstrike using various forces and methods of destruction on Zmeinyi Island.
