Patrol policeman shot dead in Odesa region

Police in Odesa region detained a man who killed a patrol policeman while on duty

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Oblast.

The tragic incident occurred today around 18:00 in the city of Izmail. It has been preliminarily established that on the outskirts of Izmail, officers of the patrol police response sector stopped a 45-year-old moped driver to check his documents. The man behaved aggressively, pulled out a weapon and started shooting at the police.

As a result, one of the police officers was injured. In response, the police officer used his service weapon and wounded the attacker.

Both were hospitalized. Unfortunately, the senior police lieutenant died in the hospital. The attacker is currently in the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Police investigators have opened criminal proceedings under Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, member of a public formation for the protection of public order and the state border or a serviceman). The defendant faces life imprisonment.

Earlier, a clash between Odesa residents and a patrol police crew that took place on the night of July 28 in Odesa resulted in the detention of civilians and the hospitalization of a patrol police inspector.

While checking the documents, the inspectors found out that the driver was wanted for evading registration or mobilization training, so they decided to detain him and take him to the Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support.

The man began to resist, behaved aggressively and tried to escape. During the detention, eyewitnesses to the incident, not having understood the situation, began to obstruct the actions of the police. A conflict ensued, during which two people inflicted bodily harm on the police inspector.
