Activists of the NGO Decolonization.Ukraine have once again updated their map with the number of streets that they believe should be renamed, reducing the number of streets in Odesa region to 198.
Thus, Odesa region has returned to fifth place in the country by this indicator.
The number of place names requiring decolonization in Mykolaiv region has also decreased - 71 against 72 previously, and in Kherson region there are 63 against 66.
The first place is held by Zaporizhzhia region, where the number of place names has not decreased since April and amounts to 1 thousand. The second place goes to Kharkiv region with 282 place names, the third to Kyiv region with 261, and the fourth is occupied by Vinnytsia region where, according to activists, 255 place names need to be decolonized.
The activists have always noted that the list is not exhaustive and will be adjusted in the future.
When the map was adjusted in April, Odesa region moved from fifth place to fourth. This happened because Kyiv and Kharkiv regions tied for second place. In both regions, 283 streets and alleys needed to be decolonized.
Earlier, the Department of International Cooperation of Culture and Marketing of the Odesa City Council reported that the city council does not plan to rename some streets and alleys of the city named after Russian cultural figures, politicians and military.
The streets in question are: Anna Akhmatova, Astashkin, Bekhterev, Volodya Dubinin, Kondrashin, Korney Chukovsky, Krasnov, Kuprin, Levitan, Nikolai Gumilev, Nemirovich-Danchenko, Alexander Bok, Pavel Shklyaruk, Sobinov, and Artist Fedorov. And also about the seven lanes: Malynovskyi, Pavlova, Vorontsovskyi, Astashkina, Pershotravnevyi, Hlazunova, and Vrubel. According to the Historical and Toponymic Commission at the Convocation Committee of the Odesa City Council, these names do not fall under the laws "On Decommunization" and "On Decolonization of Place Names."
