Odesa region continues to rank fifth in Ukraine in terms of the number of streets to be renamed in the process of decommunization and decolonization of the country by region.

Activists of the NGO Decolonization.Ukraine have updated the map with the number of streets that they believe should be renamed, counting 228 in Odesa region.

For comparison, there are 111 such streets in Mykolaiv region and 94 in Kherson region. However, in June 2024, there were 581 such streets in Odesa region, while in Mykolaiv and Kherson regions there were 407 and 156 non-decolonized streets, respectively.

Zaporizhzhia region remains the leader with 1,000 streets to be decolonized, followed by Kharkiv region with 316 streets, and Vinnytsia region with 305 streets that need to be decolonized, according to activists. The fourth place is taken by Kyiv region, where 298 streets remain to be decolonized.

The activists noted that the list is not exhaustive and will be adjusted in the future.

"The list is not exhaustive, sometimes there are streets named after local communist figures that no one knew about before. There are several communities that have not yet responded to our requests, so the map will be updated regularly," they emphasized.

Earlier, activists of the organization Decolonization. Ukraine" organization appealed to the Odesa City Council to dismantle 40 memorial plaques in the city, which they attributed to the Soviet and imperial heritage. Meanwhile, in Odesa, the city council instructed the Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture to create projects for the dismantling of Russian and Soviet monuments. Funds for the development of projects for the demolition of monuments with imperial symbols were allocated at a session of the Odesa City Council on December 4. Eleven monuments were discussed.
