Mykolaiv plans to open a prosthetic and orthotic workshop at the 4th City Hospital by the end of this year.

This was announced by Iryna Shamrai, head of the Mykolaiv Health Department, at a meeting of the Mykolaiv City Council's specialized committee on human rights, children, family, legality, and publicity.

The city has already received all the necessary equipment from German partners, and prosthetics specialists have already undergone specialized training in Germany twice and will continue to do so. The new workshop will provide rehabilitation and manufacture of prostheses for wounded soldiers. It is emphasized that prostheses need to be replaced regularly every three years, so the workshop will be in demand.

In 2024, the German company Horus Prosthetics GmbH donated equipment worth 50 thousand euros to Mykolaiv for the future prosthetic and orthotic workshop. This equipment is currently undergoing certification at the 4th City Hospital. Some of the materials for the workshop will have to be purchased at the expense of the city budget until the verification of all the equipment received is completed.

In October, the German company plans to arrive in Mykolaiv to provide training for local doctors and technicians. It is expected that the new center will be able to produce up to 30-40 prostheses per month. This will significantly improve the situation, as there is currently only one private workshop in Mykolaiv that produces about 10 prostheses a year.

Earlier, the executive committee of the Mykolaiv City Council decided to establish the workshop. The project acts as a supplement to the City's Economic and Social Development Program for 2024-2026, aimed at improving the healthcare system. Control over the implementation of the decision was entrusted to the Commission on Economic and Investment Policy of the City Council and the First Deputy Mayor.

Prosthetics will be free of charge for patients, as the Ministry of Social Policy reimburses the cost of prosthetics. The waiting list for prosthetics in Mykolaiv already includes hundreds of people. The German company Horus Prosthetics arrived in Mykolaiv in August. Doctors prosthetized nine soldiers using artificial intelligence for free. The specialists made a prosthesis that perfectly matched the patient's anatomical parameters. The entire process took 90 to 120 minutes.
