Police investigators have served a 37-year-old military officer from the senior staff of a military unit in Odesa region with a notice of suspicion of extortion of $15,000 from a man liable for military service for recruitment to a rear unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to fictitiously serve and avoid enrollment in a combat unit.
This was reported by the press service of the Main Department of the National Police in Odesa region.
The detainee, according to the investigation, promised to implement the deal by influencing authorized officials of the military unit in which he served. The man reported the crime to law enforcement agencies, and the police documented and stopped the serviceman's illegal activities.
Investigators detained the serviceman in a procedural manner after he received the agreed amount of money. They seized the money received by the serviceman in an illegal way and his cell phone with information relevant to the investigation.
Based on the collected evidence, the police eventually served the man with a notice of suspicion of receiving an unlawful benefit for influencing the decision-making of a person authorized to perform public functions, combined with extortion of such benefit. If found guilty, the man faces imprisonment for a term of three to eight years with confiscation of property.
Earlier in Odesa, an officer of the TCC and JV department was exposed who promised to "solve the issue" of mobilization through the Oberig electronic system for thousands of dollars. He was demanding money for removing him from the wanted list and issuing a deferment, using his official position.
Also in April, police detained an officer of the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi TCC and JV on suspicion of taking a bribe. He demanded USD 3,000 from a person liable for military service for removing him from the wanted list and issuing a deferral from mobilization for health reasons.
