At the age of 88, the heart of writer and local historian Anatoliy Horbatiuk stopped beating.
According to the Presidential Council of the World Club of Odessans, during his lifetime, he wrote 16 books and more than 180 scientific and journalistic articles on Odesa and its historical heritage. He was also the oldest member of the Odessites Club.
"In his youth, he played the drums in amateur and professional ensembles. He edited the newspaper of the Odesa community in Los Angeles, the Odesa Mayak. He is an academician of the Jazz Academy of the All-Ukrainian Military Academy," the club added.
Local history was one of Anatoliy Issakovych's hobbies. His main activity took place in the port of Odesa. It was here that he met and became friends with Mykhailo Zhvanetskyi. Anatoliy Horbatiuk's life stories formed the basis for some of Zhvanetskyi's short stories.
Since 1948, he had been studying to play the accordion, but when he came to try out his musical abilities in an ensemble, only the percussion position was available. So, in addition to working at the port, he played every night in restaurants and venues in various amateur and professional ensembles, as well as on the ships of the Black Sea Shipping Company.
