A Crimean resident who was captured during combat operations—the man had been fighting against the Ukrainian Armed Forces as part of the Russian army—found himself in the dock. He received the maximum sentence for treason.

Thiswas reportedby the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Prosecutors proved the guilt of the 57-year-old Simferopol resident, who defected to the aggressor state.

The investigation established that in November 2024, the man defected to the enemy. While in the city of Balashikha in the Moscow Region, he signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense.

After completing basic military training, the Crimean resident was assigned to the 121st Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 68th Motorized Rifle Division of the 6th Combined Arms Army of the Russian Armed Forces.

Subsequently, the traitor was redeployed to the Kupiansk sector to carry out missions against the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

On April 24 of this year, Ukrainian defenders captured the man on the outskirts of Kupiansk.

During the court hearing, the defendant fully admitted his guilt.

Prosecutors charged the Crimean resident under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—treason committed under martial law. This article provides for a sentence of imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years with confiscation of property.

The court sentenced the man to the maximum penalty provided for by the article—15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

Meanwhile, in Odesa, a court found a former Coast Guard serviceman guilty of treason. According to the investigation, after the occupation of Mariupol, he defected to the enemy, swore allegiance to the Russian Federation, and joined one of the Russian military units.

Also, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) recently detained in Kyiv the former head of the Crimean Autonomous Republic’s Republican Committee on Fuel, energy, and innovation policy, Serhiy Kolobov, who, following the occupation of the peninsula in 2014, defected to Russia and headed the occupying “Ministry” of Energy of Crimea.
