Life in an era of change: what 2025 was like for Intent readers

(IMAGES: Intent)

Once again, we are living in an era of change. War, shelling and air raids, blackouts, corruption scandals and an endless series of "peace agreements" are gradually trying to supplant the habit of celebrating dates. But one thing remains unchanged - our desire to summarize the results of the outgoing year in order to learn from it for the year ahead.

In 2025, Intent tried to produce the highest quality and most interesting content for you, followed important court cases, rejoiced at Ukrainian victories in Crimea and beyond, closely watched officials' declarations, calculated the damage to our lives and the environment caused by endless Russian attacks, followed local government, but most importantly, we always tried to work professionally and efficiently for our readers.

Let's take a look back at our year 2025.

Our achievements

Intent has retained its place on the updated map of recommended media from the Institute of Mass Information (IMI) and Media Detector.

To get on the map, you need to meet the following criteria:

The editorial board of Intent has also completed the training of the first set of students of its media school. In May 2025, certificates were awarded to graduates who completed the full course of study.

Theprogram was launched in November 2024 and was primarily aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in non-journalism specialties. Two graduates have already joined the editorial team.

"These were comfortable, cozy and very useful classes. The theory is modern, lively, visual, and the practice is inspiring. We didn't just listen to lectures, we created materials and worked together with the editorial team. I came here with a library degree, but I found myself in the media and am already working in a team," shared her impressions Kateryna, one of the participants.

Interview

In 2025, we managed to maintain a stable schedule for publishing text interviews on our website - we regularly offer you an interesting conversation with a prominent person, and even launched a separate project - an interview with religious leaders of the Odesa region.

The most interesting conversation for you was with Taras Shamaida, a public figure and one of the key voices of language policy in Ukraine. We talked to him about the real state of the Ukrainian language and resistance to de-Russification on the ground.

You were also interested in a conversation with writer, cultural activist and translator Ostap Ukrainets, who made several points that provoked heated discussions, such as the fact that "in Odesa, Russian is the language of security guards and cleaners."

Also important was the conversation about the decolonization processes in Odesa, which created a situation of resistance, rejection, quarrels and polarized opinions, and how this chaos was influenced by a "happy Soviet childhood" and the study of Ukrainian literature with Iryna Nechytaliuk, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor at the I. I. Mechnikov National University of Odesa. We talked to the abbess of the Holy Archangel Michael Monastery of the UOC (MP) in Odesa, Seraphima (Nadiia Shevchyk ), about how she switched to Ukrainian but is against language coercion, why they do not trust chaplaincy to UOC priests, how the Odesa diocese is being checked for ties to Russia, and why Ukraine may go wrong. And we talked to Natalia Mykhailenko , director of the Odesa Regional Center for Patriotic Education, about how the impact of the Maidan dramatically changed the history of Ukraine.

At the same time, our YouTube channel had the pleasure of talking about the emotional swings in the play about the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the culture of the 2000s, and the Language Maidan with the wonderful actress Irma Vitovska-Vantsa. From MasterChef 16 contestant Kateryna Dubchak, we learned what Odesa cuisine is and whether the judging on the show is strict.

And this is just a part of our wonderful interlocutors, and next year we plan to continue introducing you to these interesting people who shape modern Ukraine and our Ukrainian South.

See you next year: Intent.Insight

Intent introduced the format of live broadcasts in 2024, and throughout 2025 we regularly invited interesting guests to discuss the issues that concern Odesa residents. These are live broadcasts on our YouTube channel, only real emotions and the inability to hide behind editing scissors.

During the live broadcasts, we discussed with Oleh Zakharkov, a combat officer of the 40th Separate Coastal Defense Brigade, whether the enemy could break through our defense line in the Prydniprovia sector of Kherson region.

With Anatoliy Boyko, head of the Odesa regional organization of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine, and Kateryna Madens , a journalist for the online publication Anti-Corruption Dimension, we discussed where the information about the mayor's alleged Russian passport came from, why the central government remembered it now, and what awaits Odesa after Trukhanov's resignation.

We discussed with Olha Kvasnytska , a member of the Odesa City Council, why Lesia Ukrainka Avenue and Park have appeared on the map of Odesa recently, and what to expect from the competition for the best design proposal for the monument to Lesia Ukrainka.

And in August 2025, we talked about city government, the challenges facing the city authorities, what the city's funds are spent on, and a little bit about Odesa universities and the state of education in Ukraine. with the then Secretary of the Odesa City Council, and now acting Mayor Igor Koval.

We sincerely believe that such conversations without bills are important for us to influence positive changes in our region, and we plan to continue to do our best for this.

Expert

The Expert section is very important to us. In it, we not only tell you how to solve one of the many bureaucratic, legal, or everyday problems that Ukrainians face. This section is also a kind of mirror of our reality, and when we summarize the year, we can see which topics are most interesting to our readers.

In particular, the most read expert article in 2025 was"Serving a summons on the street: how to deal with the TCC". And for those who have already passed this stage, information on how and under what conditions a serviceman's insurance period is accrued may be useful.

In general, life in war creates new conditions for everyday life. Thus, during blackouts and possible problems with heating, information on how to get a subsidy for solid fuel in winter and what documents are needed may be useful.

Blogs

An author's blog on the Intent website is an opportunity to freely reflect on important or interesting topics, a format in which the author's voice sounds most fully and openly, where the classic standard of separating facts from opinions can be slightly moved, because it is the author's opinion that is most important for the blog.

In fact, this is exactly what our author Nata Chernetska says: "There are no rules now. We live in a metamodern, post-classical period, where there is a new sincerity that suggests: only as you feel, just you, right now. And if it's honest, like a knife to the heart, it catches you, then the technique and everything else. Because if we focus only on technology, how are we better than AI?"

A blog is a format where a walk through the decolonized streets of Odesa can lead to reflections on how the story of the Heroes of Kruty was stolen from us. If you want to think about creating a new Odesa meta, inspired by Paolo Sorrentino 's new movie Partenope, this is the place for you. Or maybe you want to tell us how Ukraine's national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest has changed or share your emotions about a new exhibition you visited.

We always welcome your personal opinions and topics and encourage you to join us and share them with us in a blog format.

This is what 2024 was like for Intent. A year full of historical events, interesting, though often difficult news, rich and full of information. However, as always, we will try to develop, become better and promptly inform you about the most important events in the south.
