Zaporizhzhya NPP on the verge of blackout for the second time in a week

One of the two power lines of the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP was cut off as a result of enemy shelling.

Currently, the plant is connected to the Ukrainian power grid by only one power line, the Government portal reports.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, in the steppe zone near the former shore of the Kakhovka Reservoir in Zaporizhzhia region, near the city of Enerhodar. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and the third largest in the world by total capacity. It consists of six nuclear power units of 1 GW each. On March 4, 2022, during the full-scale Russian invasion, the power plant was seized by Russian troops.

If the last line is disconnected, another complete blackout will occur at Zaporizhzhia NPP. This is a serious violation of safe operation conditions and threatens to cause an accident.

"For the second time this week, Zaporizhzhia NPP is under a real threat of blackout due to Russian shelling. Today, the IAEA Board of Governors will meet in Vienna, and we insist on the immediate full implementation of the resolution to return the occupied plant under Ukrainian control. This is the only way to guarantee the safe operation of Zaporizhzhya NPP," said Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko.

On November 16, Russian troops damaged a high-voltage line that supplies power to the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant(ZNPP).

As reported by NPC Ukrenergo, the plant is currently operating exclusively on the backup line, and in case of damage, there may be a threat of a complete blackout, which poses a critical threat to radiation safety.

The company noted that power engineers have already found the site of the accident and are carrying out repairs, despite the high risk to life.

"The place of damage to the main power line has already been identified. Ukrenergo's repair teams are carrying out emergency repair works. We are grateful to our repair colleagues for their work in conditions of high risk to life," the statement reads.

Power engineers will start restoring full power to the plant as soon as the security situation allows.

On November 17, Intent wrote that the Russian military attacked energy system facilities across the country with missiles. Emergency power outages were introduced. According to the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko, the enemy is hitting electricity generation and transmission facilities throughout Ukraine with missiles.

"The transmission system operator has urgently introduced emergency power outages. Where possible, rescuers and power engineers are already working to eliminate the consequences. The light will win," said Galushchenko.

According to power engineers, due to the massive strike, emergency blackouts were introduced in Kyiv city, Dnipropetrovska and Donetska oblasts. Also, since 06:53, emergency power outages have been introduced in Cherkasy region. In addition, there is currently no power supply in some parts of Odesa. Emergency blackouts have been introduced in Kyiv region by order of NPC Ukrenergo.
