On July 31, for the first time in 3.5 years, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine launched a live broadcast on YouTube, where it signed the decision on draft law 13533, which revokes the adopted law 4555 on the transfer of the independence of the NABU and the SAPO to the Prosecutor General.
The vote was 331 in favor. The Rada adopted the presidential law on NABU and SAPO and voted to urgently sign it by the Speaker and submit it to the President for signature
The law No. 4555, adopted and signed in one day, leads to radical changes in criminal legislation, in particular, it narrows the powers and effectively abolishes the exclusive jurisdiction of the anti-corruption bodies NABU and SAPO, allowing the Prosecutor General to influence the pre-trial investigation of NABU, eliminates the possibility of conducting searches without a court and significantly expands other powers of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. Protesters of the law say that it brings back the level of corruption of the Yanukovych era and completely 'nullifies' all the achievements that Ukraine has been making for decades.
After Zelenskyy signed the law, the international community also reacted. The OECD warned Ukraine that weakening the independence of NABU and SAPO could disrupt investment in defense and reconstruction, as well as prevent accession to the organization. Despite calls to veto Law No. 12414, President Zelensky signed it, raising concerns among international partners. This was stated in a letter addressed to Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Iryna Mudra, a copy of which is available to Yevropeiska Pravda.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has warned Ukraine that undermining the independence of anti-corruption bodies could negatively affect investment in defense and financial support for the country's reconstruction. The letter expresses concern over Law 12414, which weakens the positions of the NABU and the SAPO.
A wave of rallies for the independence of the anti-corruption agencies took place in different cities of Ukraine.
