Today, a team from the United Nations Development Program visited Mykolaiv. The delegation was headed by UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine Auke Lotsma. The delegation also included the deputy head of the office and senior advisers.
This was reported by Mykolaiv City Council.
During the meeting, Mayor Sienkiewicz spoke about the priority areas of work, emphasizing that Mykolaiv is systematically working to build a solid foundation for recovery. "We do not want to just rebuild something. Our goal is to make Mykolaiv better than it was before. That is why we follow the principle of Build Back Better," the mayor emphasized.
He noted that, in addition to rebuilding infrastructure and strengthening energy resilience, the authorities are focused on implementing so-called "soft projects". These initiatives are aimed at improving living conditions: the development of the educational sector (schools, kindergartens) and increasing human potential through retraining and employment programs.
Earlier this year, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), together with the Danish government, launched a large-scale three-year project called the Strategic Partnership for Mykolaiv, with a budget of more than $36 million to be spent on the city's recovery and development.
The initiative, which is part of long-term assistance to Ukraine, aims to improve the living conditions of local residents, help IDPs return, and provide support to the most vulnerable.
According to Oleksiy Kuleba, Vice Prime Minister for Reconstruction of Ukraine, the project focuses not only on rebuilding infrastructure but also on creating better living conditions in war-affected communities.
