A resident of Izmail, Odesa region, who is suspected of fatally wounding police officer Mykhailo Soroka, was imposed a measure of restraint in the form of detention without bail.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Oblast.

The tragedy occurred on August 5 on the outskirts of Izmail. A local motorcyclist opened fire with a weapon on inspectors of the patrol police response sector while they were performing their duties.

Senior Police Lieutenant Mykhailo Soroka sustained a fatal gunshot wound.

Currently, investigators of the Investigation Department of the Main Department of the National Police in Odesa Region have served the suspect a notice of suspicion under Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - murder and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer in connection with the performance of his duties.

If his guilt is proven, the man faces imprisonment for a term of nine to fifteen years or life.

The Kyiv District Court of Odesa upheld the investigator's request, agreed with the prosecutor, and imposed a pre-trial restraint on the suspect.

Previously, a clash between Odesa residents and a patrol police crew that took place on the night of July 28 in Odesa resulted in the detention of civilians and the hospitalization of a patrol police inspector.

While checking the documents, the inspectors found out that the driver was wanted for evading registration or mobilization training, so they decided to detain him and take him to the Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support. The man began to resist, behaved aggressively and tried to escape. During the detention, eyewitnesses to the incident, not having understood the situation, began to obstruct the actions of the police. A conflict ensued, during which two people inflicted bodily harm on the police inspector.
