Mother from Odesa region detained on suspicion of strangling her daughter

Police detained a resident of Odesa district on suspicion of the premeditated murder of her young daughter.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa region.

According to the police, on the morning of May 3, a 43-year-old resident of one of the settlements of the Yaskivska community reported to the police the death of her nine-month-old daughter, noting that the child died unexpectedly.

However, during the investigation, the police found out that the mother, in a state of nervous breakdown because of the baby's crying, had inflicted bodily harm on the child. Preliminarily, the child's death was caused by asphyxiation (suffocation). The exact cause will be established by forensic medical examination.

The suspect was detained and the issue of serving her a notice of suspicion of intentional murder of a young child is being decided. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to 15 years or life imprisonment.

A number of examinations have been ordered as part of the proceedings initiated under Article 115(2)(2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

In February, police and rescuers spent several hours searching for three teenagers who allegedly fell through the ice in a rural pond in Odesa Oblast. Boys aged 14 and 15 from one of the villages of the Krasnosilska community fell through the ice on a local pond and died.

On February 5, a woman and a child fell out of the window of the 16th floor of a multi-storey building in Kyiv district of Odesa. According to law enforcement, the woman died on the spot from her injuries. The girl was hospitalized in serious condition, but could not be saved. The child was 9 years old, her mother was 37.

Investigators registered the incident in the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: intentional murder of a minor child (Article 115, Part 2, Clause 2) and intentional murder with the note "suicide" (Article 115, Part 1).
