Kherson plans to build a new underground power plant. The project, worth more than UAH 500 million, has no confirmed funding yet, but is expected to reduce energy costs.

According to the DREAM digital recovery ecosystem, an energy project is planned to be implemented on the territory of Kherson CHP.

It involves the construction of a new power plant based on four gas piston units with a capacity of 5 MW each, which will operate in cogeneration mode, simultaneously generating electricity and heat.

The project is part of the Unified Project Portfolio (UPP) and is part of the national strategy for the development of distributed generation until 2035. The initiator was the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, and the balance sheet holder is Kherson CHP JSC.

According to the technical solution, each plant will generate electricity that will be supplied to the main distribution system. In addition, the engines will also generate heat - 2.8 megawatts from each unit. This heat will be utilized using special boilers, which will partially compensate for the plant's thermal capacity at lower costs compared to outdated equipment.

The plant is being designed with physical protection in mind - with a burial underground. The fuel will be natural gas supplied by a gas pipeline. The cogeneration unit will allow the CHPP to enter the electricity and ancillary services market. The project will also allow the units to start and stop depending on the price of electricity, which will help reduce the cost of electricity production.

The project budget is UAH 500.3 million, of which UAH 500 million are capital expenditures for construction and UAH 300 thousand are operating expenses for design and survey work. The estimated duration of the project is 12 months. At the same time, there is no confirmed source of funding for the project.

According to the developers, the project will have a positive impact on energy security, the economy, and the modernization of the region's energy infrastructure.

There are also plans to build a new nuclear complex in Mykolaiv region for the needs of nuclear energy. UAH 9.3 billion is allocated for its implementation. This project is part of the state targeted economic program Nuclear Fuel of Ukraine, which aims to create the country's own production facilities for the production of nuclear fuel.
