In Odesa, decolonizers demand to clear the facade of Gagarin and more

Activists of the organization Decolonization. Ukraine" organization appealed to the Odesa City Council with a demand to dismantle at least ten memorial plaques related to the Soviet or Russian past in the city.

This was reported by the organization's press service.

Among them are plaques:

• Yuri Gagarin on 14-a Frantsuzsky Boulevard,
• Semen Kirsanov at 10 Havanna Street,
• to the heroes of the Soviet Union Maksymenko, Hladkov, Burmakov, Zhukov, and others - on a number of streets in the city center,
• poet Semen Kirsanov - on the house where he lived in 1906-1926.

In response to the activists' appeal, the Department of International Cooperation, Culture and Marketing of the Odesa City Council provided official explanations for each of the objects proposed for removal.

The letters state that some of the buildings do not have the status of cultural heritage monuments, but in some cases, memorial plaques are placed on objects listed in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine, in particular, architecture and urban planning.

Each of these proposals for dismantling will be decided at the next meeting of the historical and toponymic commission at the executive committee of the Odesa City Council.

Meanwhile, in Odesa, the city council instructed the Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture to create projects for the dismantling of Russian and Soviet monuments. Funds for the development of projects for the demolition of monuments with imperial symbols were allocated at a session of the Odesa City Council on December 4. It was about eleven monuments.

Earlier, members of the executive committee appointed the Capital Construction Department of the Odesa City Council as the customer for the design of dismantling (transferring, removing) monuments from the public space in Odesa.
