A lawyer, a former MP, an economist and a physicist decide to run for rector of ONU

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has published an order on the nomination of candidates for the post of rector of the I. I. Mechnikov Odesa National University.

Theelection will be held on May 8 and will be secret.

The rector will be elected by secret ballot. The university has to prepare voter lists: 75% will be made up of researchers, research and teaching staff, 10% will be elected representatives from among other university employees, and 15% will be representatives of students. The candidate with the absolute majority of votes wins.

The candidates are as follows:

Volodymyr Kovalchuk - Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor.

Volodymyr Kovalchuk was born in Kryvyi Rih. In 1981, he graduated from Dnipro State University with a degree in Physics. He continued his scientific training in the postgraduate program at the Institute of Semiconductor Physics in Kyiv and in the doctoral program at the South Ukrainian Pedagogical University named after Ushynsky. For ten years, from 2013 to 2023, Volodymyr Kovalchuk was the director of the College of Computer Technology at Odesa State Environmental University. After that, he served as the rector of the university for 20 days.

Andrii Neuhodnikov is a PhD in Law, Associate Professor.

Born in the Sverdlovsk region (Russia), he moved with his family to Bilyaivka (Odesa region) as a child, where he grew up. In 2002, he graduated from the Odesa Law Academy. Later he worked as an assistant to the rector there. He was an assistant to Serhiy Kivalov when he was a member of parliament. Andriy Neuhodnikov was also twice elected to the Odesa City Council: in 2010 - from the Party of Regions, and in 2015 - from the "Marine Party of Serhiy Kivalov". He worked in the Standing Committee on Economic, Investment Policy, Trade and Information Technology. He is currently the Deputy Head of the Odesa Military Administration.

Viacheslav Truba is a Doctor of Law, Professor.

Current rector. He graduated from ONU and continued to work there. For 14 years, he headed the ONU Faculty of Economics and Law. In February 2021, he was elected rector. He teaches civil and family law. He chairs the ONU Academic Council, is a member of the Association of Civilists of Ukraine, and is a member of the editorial boards of professional publications, including the Rule of Law, Law of Ukraine, and the Scientific Bulletin of the Kyiv Institute of the National Guard.

Sergiy Yakubovsky is a Doctor of Economics, Professor.

Head of the Department of World Economy and International Economic Relations of ONU, teaches "World Economy", "International Economic Relations", "International Monetary and Credit Relations" and "International Finance".

He has written more than 180 publications on the development of the world economy, international finance and European integration. In 2019-2023, he managed the project of the European Commission's Jean Monnet Program on migration and integration. He is a member of the board of the Ukrainian Association of International Economists and heads its Odesa branch.
