Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych has instructed officials to draft a request to the Cabinet of Ministers seeking authorization to install cameras to record traffic violations.
This was reported by the Mykolaiv City Council.
During a staff meeting, Oleksandr Senkevych noted that this decision is necessary due to the increase in the number of traffic accidents with serious consequences. In particular, he mentioned a recent fatal traffic accident in the Mykolaiv region in which employees of the municipal enterprise “Mykolaivelektrotrans” were killed.
The mayor of Mykolaiv also noted that law enforcement officers are increasingly recording serious traffic violations within the city itself.
“This is no longer a matter of driving etiquette—it is a matter of human life,” emphasized Oleksandr Senkevych.
Police have identified the cause of the traffic accident in the Mykolaiv region that killed 12 people and left six others hospitalized. According to the investigation, the driver of a Nissan Murano caused the accident by driving toward a minibus in his own lane. This caused the Mercedes Sprinter passenger minibus to veer off the road, overturn, and end up in the oncoming lane, where it collided with a Volvo truck.
After the accident, the driver of the Nissan Murano was located and stopped at the exit from Mykolaiv. He is currently in custody. The man faces up to ten years in prison. The court is expected to determine a pretrial measure for the suspect in the near future. The investigation continues to establish all the circumstances of the traffic accident.
On Sunday, July 5, a Day of Mourning was declared in Mykolaiv following the accident. National flags were flown at half-mast throughout the city, and entertainment events and public celebrations were canceled. Cityresidents were urged to honor the memory of the victims with a moment of silence.
