Inverter + Battery: How to Build an Off-Grid Power System

An off-grid power system based on a https://deps.ua/ua/katalog/solar-inverters-controllers.htmlinverter, a charger (or a separate charging unit) and a battery allows household appliances to continue operating during power outages. To create a reliable system, it is essential to correctly select the equipment’s power rating and the type of energy storage device.

Criteria for Selecting an Inverter

An inverter converts direct current from the battery into alternating current with a voltage of 230 V (or 220 V). When selecting a device, you should focus on technical parameters that meet the needs of a specific home:

  1. Output waveform (pure sine wave for sensitive equipment).
  2. Rated operating power, which must exceed the total power consumption of the appliances.
  3. Peak power required to start devices with high inrush currents.
  4. Rated voltage of the battery system (usually 12, 24, or 48 V), which must match the inverter’s input specifications.

Selecting a model with a pure sine wave is mandatory for the proper operation of gas boilers, circulation pumps, and refrigerators. Models with a modified sine wave are suitable only for lighting or simple heating devices.

Battery Specifications

The system’s efficiency depends on the chemical composition and capacity of the batteries. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) models demonstrate the best performance for cyclic operation due to the following properties:

Using less expensive types of lead-acid batteries (AGM or GEL) is justified on a limited budget, but they require more time to charge and can withstand significantly fewer cycles. It is also important to note that lead-acid batteries should not be discharged beyond 50%.

Assembly and Safety Guidelines

Connecting system components requires attention to detail, as high currents in a DC circuit can cause contacts to overheat. Follow these recommendations during installation:

High-quality connections and the correct wire gauge prevent voltage drops under load. Before starting the system, it is important to check the polarity of the connections, as a mistake will result in immediate equipment failure.

To create an effective backup, you must balance the inverter’s power output with the total battery capacity. A properly designed system ensures long-term autonomy and stable operation of home appliances for many years.
