Car explosion in Odesa classified as a terrorist attack

The Security Service of Ukraine has classified the car explosion in the Kyiv district of Odesa as a terrorist act and has already opened a criminal investigation.

This was reported by the SBU press service.

According to preliminary investigation data, the explosion occurred today around 5:00 a.m. near a residential building on Akademika Korolyova Street. The driver of the car was killed. The Security Service, together with the National Police, is taking comprehensive measures to establish all the circumstances of the incident and the persons involved in its commission. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing under Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act).

It should be noted that the day before, the court remanded in custody without bail three men who were detained by an SBU officer in Odesa on suspicion of preparing terrorist attacks against military personnel and their families. The attacks were to be carried out through the remote activation of homemade bombs. Initially, the defendants had been tracking the residences of Ukrainian defenders and parking lots for a long time. Later, they received the coordinates of a cache from the federal security service, from which they took two improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The criminals planned to plant both bombs at the entrance to the apartment of two servicemen of the Defense Forces.

The SBU CI detained a 55-year-old former law enforcement officer from Odesa region on suspicion of organizing explosives caches to be used for terrorist attacks.

The Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa is considering the case of 19-year-old Serhii, who is accused of the terrorist attack. According to the investigation, he planted a homemade explosive under the car of a military prosecutor, acting on the instructions of the FSB.
