Mykolaiv City Council has announced the start of cooperation with the Japanese company SmartCity Research Institute, with the financial support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization(UNIDO).

This was reported by the Mykolaiv City Council.

The project will be implemented in partnership with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu LLC and the local representative - Mykolaiv Water Hub. This cooperation is aimed at implementing innovative solutions for the development of the city and its infrastructure. The GLOCAL-EYEZ system uses artificial intelligence to monitor the condition of road infrastructure. The project, which has become a pilot for the country, will significantly improve the efficiency of road repairs and maintenance.

The system operates on the basis of data collected from vibrations and images received from smartphones installed on municipal vehicles such as buses, trucks, and cars. This allows AI to analyze and evaluate key indicators, such as the pavement evenness index (IRI), and detect cracks, potholes, and other damage. All detected defects are uploaded to the cloud platform in almost real time.

Global experience shows that this technology can significantly optimize costs. GLOCAL-EYEZ has already been implemented in more than 300 municipalities in Japan and in more than 10 countries. Its use has reduced inspection time by 30%, increased repair efficiency by 60%, and potentially reduced road maintenance costs by up to 80%.

In addition to Mykolaiv, the first cohort of cities to implement this project with the international team also includes Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, and Khmelnytskyi. These four cities will become platforms for scaling the technology in Ukraine and attracting further international investment.
