The Khadzhybeyskyi District Court of Odesa found a serviceman from one of the territorial centers for recruitment and social support in Odesa guilty of robbing pensioners and sentenced him to seven years in prison.
This was reported by the Dumskaya newspaper with reference to the court's verdict.
The incident occurred in late October last year on Kosmonavtiv Street. According to the case file, the convict snatched a bag containing a Samsung mobile phone, flashlights, an umbrella, food and a pension certificate from a random passerby. The total value of the property was estimated at almost 2.5 thousand hryvnias.
In court, the accused put forward an unexpected version of events. According to him, during a phone conversation with the girl, he mentioned his work at the TCC. A passing pensioner allegedly heard this and began to speak negatively about him. The soldier thought that the woman had pro-Russian views, and he decided to take revenge: he waited for her outside the store and took her bag.
The robber said that at first he mistook the Ukrainian pension card for a Russian document, and when he realized his mistake, he threw it on the roof of the pavilion on the way out. He simply threw the rest of the items in the trash.
Despite the attempts to give the crime an ideological color, the court took into account the biography of the defendant, who turned out to be a criminal with a record: he had already been convicted of burglary, drug trafficking, and even premeditated murder.
The man fully admitted his guilt, compensated the victim for the damage and asked that his military service and the fact that he was raising two children aged 5 and 6 by himself be taken into account. However, the judge took a tough stance and sentenced him to imprisonment.
