In Russia, State Duma deputy Yana Lantratova, who is accused in Ukraine of illegally taking children from occupied Kherson, was appointed as the new human rights ombudsman.

According to NV, on May 14, the State Duma officially supported her candidacy for the post of ombudsman after the expiration of the term of office of Tatiana Moskalkova, who had headed the human rights ombudsman for ten years.

In Ukraine, Lantratova is involved in criminal proceedings regarding the deportation of children from the Kherson Regional Children's Home during the occupation of the city in 2022. Inna Varlamova, the wife of Sergei Mironov, the leader of the Fair Russia party, is also involved in the case.

According to the investigation, at the end of August 2022, they came to the occupied Kherson under the guise of an official visit and took two children to Russia - 10-month-old Margarita Prokopenko and two-year-old Ilya Vashchenko.

The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine emphasizes that there were no medical or security reasons for the evacuation of the children. After the deportation, they were issued Russian birth certificates.

After the outbreak of full-scale war, Lantratova repeatedly visited the occupied Ukrainian territories. Prior to her appointment as ombudsman, she was a member of the State Duma and headed the Committee for the Development of Civil Society and Religious Associations.

Her predecessor, Tetiana Moskalkova, is under sanctions from a number of countries for supporting Russian policy in the occupied territories and alleged involvement in the illegal export of Ukrainian children.

Recently, the children from the Kherson Children's Home, who were illegally taken by the Russian military in 2022, were found on the Russian state portal for adoption.

As Intent previously wrote, Yale University has published a study on the involvement of Russian state-owned companies Gazprom and Rosneft in the deportation and "re-education" of Ukrainian children.

As a reminder, the UN International Commission of Inquiry concluded that the removal of Ukrainian children from the temporarily occupied territories by Russia is a crime against humanity. In addition, the commission considers the delay in their return to Ukraine a war crime.
