Mykolaiv has allocated UAH 310 million to repair shelters in nine schools, three kindergartens and two hospitals in the city. The works are to ensure safe conditions for education and the operation of medical facilities during emergencies.
This was announced by Oleksiy Savchuk, Head of the Capital Construction Department of the Mykolaiv City Council.
Mykolaiv is preparing projects to repair shelters in nine educational institutions and two hospitals. According to Savchuk, the work should provide safe conditions for children to study full-time.
Among the institutions where shelters are planned are the Academy of Children's Creativity, Lyceum No. 8, gymnasiums No. 18, 10, 14, 33, and kindergartens No. 65, 75, and 126. In addition, shelters for Hospital No. 3 and the Emergency Medical Center are at the design stage.
According to Savchuk, UAH 310 million is allocated for the construction of shelters in 2025. The most expensive facility is a shelter for gymnasium No. 10, with an estimated cost of UAH 70 million, while the rest of the facilities are estimated at about UAH 30 million. According to the official, they plan to start implementing these projects in the near future.
In early August, Mykolaiv inspected shelters in educational institutions and found that they did not meet safety standards. Experts noted problems with access and providing the necessary conditions for people.
The inspection covered kindergartens No. 22 and No. 29, gymnasiums No. 20 and No. 46, and lyceums No. 19 and No. 28. The inspectors assessed the safety of the shelters, accessibility for people with limited mobility and people with disabilities, as well as the availability of water, light, ventilation and sanitary conditions.
Representatives of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights also inspected shelters at the Oleksandrov Lyceum, Kalynonka kindergarten, Molodizhny Palace of Culture, Zakhyst utility company and a temporary accommodation facility for people in difficult life circumstances.
The inspections followed a scandal that occurred during a nighttime rocket attack on August 2 and 3, when several teenagers and families with children were unable to use a shelter because it was closed. Police opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
