On October 21, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine decided to award the title of Hero of Ukraine to Oleksandr Hordiienko, a deputy of the Kherson Regional Council, Chairman of the Farmers' Association and private landowner who was killed by a Russian drone on September 5, 2025.
This became known from the results of the vote in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The parliament's decision was made possible by a petition published by his daughter Alina Gordienko on September 8. The petition quickly gained the required 25,000 votes. Now, after 271 votes in favor in the Verkhovna Rada, the President of Ukraine has to sign the decree.
Born in 1967 in the Kherson region, Oleksandr Gordienko has been involved in agriculture near Beryslav since 1992. After the de-occupation of the right bank of the Kherson region, he became a real symbol of resilience.
His daughter Alina says that Oleksandr single-handedly clearedthousands of hectares of minefields, removing more than 5,000 anti-tank mines. He saved equipment and workers from shelling using electronic warfare equipment.
For his unique fight against enemy aircraft, which included destroying drones with a rifle, Hordiyenko was nicknamed 'Farmer Rambo' in the Kherson region. In total, he shot down more than 200 Russian drones.
Oleksandr Hordiienko's life was cut short by a Russian drone strike in the village of Urozhayne, Beryslav district, on September 5, 2025, where he sustained life-threatening injuries.
It is symbolic that only a few days before the tragedy, on September 2, 2025, Oleksandr Hordiienko participated in a meeting with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko to discuss the problems of farmers in the context of war.
