In order to prevent the spread of pollution, units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Odesa Oblast have installed booms on the Dniester River bed.

This was reported by Iryna Mazalova, Head of the Department of State Ecological Supervision (Control) of Water Resources in Odesa Oblast.

Measures have also been taken to protect the water intake of Odesa, where additional barriers have been installed to prevent pollutants from entering the water intake channel.

After receiving the report, state inspectors went to the site and inspected the waters of the Dniester River and the Dniester Estuary. The environmentalists found pollution spots and took water samples for laboratory tests. According to preliminary results of the analysis, only some indicators, such as phosphates and oil products, were found to be slightly exceeded. Studies on other indicators are ongoing. The approximate size of the detected spots was about six meters long and up to 70 meters wide.

As of now, no new pollution sites have been detected. The situation, according to the inspection, is under constant control of environmental services and the regional commission on technogenic and environmental safety and emergencies.

After a missile and drone attack by Russia on March 7, stains of industrial oils appeared on the water surface of the Dniester River in Ukraine and Moldova. On March 12, Moldova initiated an extraordinary meeting of the Commission for the Sustainable Use and Protection of the Dniester River Basin to synchronize the actions of Ukrainian and Moldovan services to localize the pollution and minimize possible environmental consequences.
