Mykolaiv region has gone through one of the most difficult winters during the full-scale war without critical disruptions in heat supply. One of the key reasons was a significant advantage in electricity production - the region generates about 4 gigawatts of power when it needs only 300 megawatts.
Vitaliy Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, said this in an interview.
According to him, preparations for possible blackouts began in 2022. The region strengthened the protection of critical infrastructure in advance, increased backup power supplies, purchased generators, and began to actively implement alternative energy.
Despite the difficult situation in the power grid and strict outage schedules, when electricity was sometimes supplied for only 2-4 hours a day, most residents of the region remained warm.
A key role in this was played by the so-called "energy island" - a backup power system that already allows to supply up to 65% of Mykolaiv's critical infrastructure during blackouts. The plan is to increase this figure to 91%.
Following previous attacks on the energy infrastructure, including the attack on Mykolaiv CHP, the region has significantly strengthened its reserves. The company installed 18 additional modular boiler houses, bringing the total number of them to over 90.
This makes it possible to provide heat to about 100,000 residents even in the event of a recurrence of critical situations.
Thus, the combination of energy surplus, backup solutions and preparation allowed Mykolaiv region to go through the heating season without major crises.
As previously reported by Intent, on March 18, Mykolaiv introduced hourly power cuts amid an emergency in the power grid.
