Clean water should be available in the city's taps by the end of 2025 or early next year.

This was announced on September 16 during a telethon by Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Water Association.

According to him, the new water supply system, worth UAH 680 million, has already been connected to the city network, but it is designed for a different water quality. Therefore, the construction of additional treatment facilities is underway in parallel. These works are expected to be completed by the end of the year, and it will take another month to set them up.

Kim emphasized that water quality will improve gradually. In areas close to the treatment plants, the quality will improve faster - within a week to a month. However, in remote areas where there is little flow, it will take up to three months for the old water to completely leave the system.

Earlier, in early September, it was reported that the water supply system was already fully ready for pumping water, and high-quality water supply was expected in October 2025. The new deadline is due to the need to complete the construction and debug the treatment plant.

The new water supply system will ensure a stable supply of treated water for more than 500,000 residents of Mykolaiv who have been experiencing a shortage of quality drinking water since May 2022. In April 2022, Russian troops destroyed a water pipeline supplying water from the Dnipro River. As a result, the city was left without water supply, and later the network was supplied with salt water from the estuary, and then with river water of poorer quality.

The system is being restored with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The Cabinet of Ministers has already allocated UAH 125.5 million from the reserve fund for water supply. Initially, the construction work was carried out by several companies that had previously received large-scale government contracts, including Avtostrada, Rostdorstroy, and Ukrtransmist. However, criminal proceedings were opened against some contractors, so they were changed.
