Mykolaiv Opens First Safe Shelter in Art Center for 125 Children

For the first time in Mykolaiv, a safe shelter has been set up in an out-of-school education institution. The modern shelter was built in a children's and youth art center in one of the city's districts, which will allow children to continue their studies even during air raids.

This was reported by the press service of Mykolaiv City Council.

The 137-square-meter room is designed for 125 people. The walls, floor, and ceiling have been renovated, and a ventilation system, emergency lighting, and uninterruptible power supply have been installed. The shelter is equipped with everything you need: a bathroom, a medical corner, two exits, drinking and industrial water supplies, furniture, appliances and teaching materials.

The renovation work was carried out by the city council's housing and communal services department.

According to Olena, the acting director of the institution, the basement was in a very poor condition, but the housing and communal services department was able to make high-quality repairs in just three months.

This school year, 43 clubs are running, with 1500 children attending. Currently, classes are held at the city's secondary schools. Now 9 groups will be able to return to their homes, including those with honorary titles.

The commission has already accepted the shelters, and soon the children will be able to attend classes in safe conditions again.

In Mykolaiv , shelters are being set up in schools and kindergartens to ensure that children can safely return to full-time education. As of today, 64 educational institutions in the city have safe shelters. Among them, 26 kindergartens already have protective structures and are operating in full-time mode. 36 schools are also equipped with shelters and are accepting students.

Additionally, 5 more kindergartens and 3 schools have bomb shelters that are fully prepared but are not yet in use, as water purification systems are expected to be installed.

Ukraine plans to build nearly 14,000 shelters by 2034. The Cabinet of Ministers has already approved the Strategy for the Development of the Civil Protection Facilities Fund, and the total cost of the project will be UAH 789.3 billion, most of which is to be provided in the form of international assistance.
