The man who exploded on a mine in Odesa region on August 10 swam more than 100 meters from the shore.

This became known from the National Police's response to a request from Novyny.LIVE.

He came across an underwater mine that detonated. On the same day, two vacationers from Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi exploded on a mine in Zatoka. Another person was injured in the explosion and taken to the city's multidisciplinary hospital with a diagnosis of mine-blast trauma.

Currently, law enforcement officers have initiated criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (murder with the note accident). In total, in 2025, five people were killed by mines while swimming in the sea in Odesa region. Over the entire period of the full-scale invasion, there have been nine such cases.

In response to the tragedy in Odesa region, security checks on beaches have been intensified. The number of patrols inspecting the coast and conducting preventive conversations with people has been increased in recreation areas. This includes foot patrols, car and bicycle patrols. Members of civil society groups, the National Guard and the Military Law Enforcement Service have also been involved in the patrols.

The vacationers who died in the explosions in Odesa region on August 10 were swimming on beaches that could have been mined in 2022 to prevent Russians from landing in Odesa region.

According to the police, there were two explosions, and according to preliminary data, three vacationers were killed - a woman and two men. One man died in Karolino-Buhaz, and another man and woman died in Zatoka.

As of July 2025, there are 32 officially designated safe swimming areas in the region. Of these, 30 are located in the city of Odesa, and one more in the city of Chornomorsk and the village of Prymorske, Izmail district. All these zones have undergone a comprehensive inspection, including the availability of shelters and the absence of mine danger both on land and in the water.
