Izmail supported the appeal to preserve the Danube Hydrometeorological Observatory

The Executive Committee of the Izmail City Council has decided to support the position of the primary trade union organization of the Danube Hydrometeorological Observatory and to appeal to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine with a request to preserve the institution as a separate legal entity.

This was reported by an Intent correspondent.

The executive committee made the decision on February 4 after considering a letter from the trade union organization. The document emphasizes the importance of the stable functioning of the observation, which performs state and international tasks in the field of hydrometeorological monitoring, has scientific importance and promotes cross-border cooperation in the Danube region.

The members of the executive committee also authorized Mayor Andriy Abramchenko to sign an official appeal to the Head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine Andriy Danik on behalf of the Izmail City Council.
The letter states that the Danube Hydrometeorological Observatory is an important component of Ukraine's scientific presence in the Danube macro-region. The institution participates in international conferences, European programs and projects, and in 2023-2025 became a beneficiary of two Horizon Europe projects - SUNDANSE and DANSER.

Through its activities, the Observatory provides the community with highly skilled jobs, contributes to the development of the region's scientific potential, and enhances the international image of Izmail. In addition, the institution actively attracts grants and creates additional opportunities for socio-economic development of the community.

The appeal emphasizes that the possible liquidation or merger of the observatory with another institution could lead to a loss of international funding, termination of participation in European projects, and complications in Ukraine's fulfillment of international obligations.

In view of this, the Executive Committee advocated for the preservation of the Danube Hydrometeorological Observatory as an independent institution and the prevention of its reorganization. According to the officials, this decision will ensure the continuity of international cooperation and preserve the scientific and socio-economic significance of the facility for the Izmail community.

The Danube Hydrometeorological Observatory was founded in September 1960 in Izmail. The institution was created on the basis of the Hydrometeorological Bureau, the weather station and the Danube Mouth Station in Vilkovo. It monitors the environment in the Danube region. The Observatory was registered as a legal entity in 1995. The founder is the Kyiv-based State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
