A military man was at the wheel: SBI takes over Odesa accident investigation

The State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation of the road accident that occurred in Odesa on the morning of April 7.

This was reported by the SBI press service.

According to preliminary data, a Volkswagen Transporter driven by a service man collided with a shuttle bus. As a result of the accident, one passenger died on the spot, and eleven other people sought medical attention.

The driver, a soldier, was hospitalized and is in serious condition. Immediately after the accident, SBI officers arrived at the scene and began initial investigative actions. Criminal proceedings have been opened for violation of traffic safety rules that caused the death of a person.

If found guilty, the perpetrator of the accident faces imprisonment for a term of three to eight years with or without deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for up to three years.

The drivers of the minibus and the minibus were sent to be tested to see if they were intoxicated. Traffic on the section of the road where the accident occurred was hampered for several hours until the buses were evacuated.

On the morning of June 7, 2025, a traffic accident occurred on the Odesa-Mykolaiv highway near the village of Malovarvarivka, Mykolaiv district, in which four people were injured.

And in 2024, Odesa region was among the three regions with the highest number of accidents committed by drunk drivers - 7,073 reports, second only to Dnipro (8,745) and Kyiv (8,176). At the same time, the Prosecutor General's Office opened more than a thousand criminal proceedings for such offenses, which is 11% more than in 2023. That year, there were more than 1,000 road accidents caused by drunk drivers, 110 of which resulted in deaths and 1,302 people were injured. Every 25th accident with victims was caused by intoxicated drivers.
