Discussion of Russia's war against Ukraine was one of the topics during the debate between Donald Trump and US Vice President Kamala Harris.
The debate between the US presidential candidates took place in Philadelphia, with the start scheduled for 21:00 local time. The debate lasted an hour and a half with two commercial breaks and was held without an audience.
In particular, Donald Trump expressed his vision of the conflict. He emphasized that he wants the war to end as soon as possible, emphasizing the tragic scale of the losses: "Millions of people are dying in Ukraine, it's terrible."
Trump also said that he has personal acquaintances with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin, and that both respect him, unlike Joe Biden.
The former president expressed confidence that he could stop the war before his possible return to the presidency.
He also warned that the war could lead to World War III: "We are very close."
When asked if Ukraine's victory was in the US national interest, Trump replied: "It's in the national interest of the United States that the war ends."
Kamala Harris, for her part, expressed concern about Trump's possible actions. She stated that Trump "will surrender Ukraine within 24 hours if he is elected president."
According to her, if Trump had been president at the time of the invasion, "Putin would be sitting in Kyiv right now. "
Harris emphasized Ukraine's right to defend itself and noted that thanks to the support of the United States and allies, Ukrainian troops continue to resist Russia.
She emphasized that it is thanks to American weapons and equipment that Ukraine is still able to defend itself and resist aggression.
On July 21, incumbent US President Joe Biden announced that he was withdrawing his candidacy from the election. The US President also suggested that Vice President Harris should become the Democratic candidate.
