In Mykolaiv, discussions are ongoing regarding the name of the future memorial site dedicated to Ukrainian prisoners of war, civilian hostages, and those missing in action. The Toponymic Commission has proposed three options, and the families of the servicemen have put forward their own suggestion.
You can vote for the memorial’s name on the e-DEM e-democracy platform.
The Toponymic Commission’s proposals are as follows:
The public has proposed the name “Space of Captivity Remembrance.” The initiative is supported by family members of prisoners of war and those missing in action and has already gathered 466 signatures.
Mykolaiv’s chief architect, Yevhen Polyakov, has also endorsed the name “Space of Remembrance for Captivity.” He called on city residents to vote in favor of this proposal. He emphasized that “this particular name emerged during our collaborative work with the families of prisoners of war, people who returned from Russian captivity, and the families of those missing in action.” According to the chief architect, the word “captivity” honestly reflects one of the most tragic chapters of the Russian-Ukrainian war and preserves the historical truth about the people for whom this space is being created.
“We are not just choosing a name. We are choosing what truth we will leave behind in Mykolaiv,” emphasized Yevhen Polyakov.
The memorial will be located in a section of the boulevard area on Sadova Street, bounded by Vadym Blagovistnyi Street and Spaska Street.
Cultural institutions in Mykolaiv may be left without salaries starting September 1. This was announced by Volodymyr Topchiy, director of the Mykolaiv Zoo, during a meeting of the Mykolaiv City Council’s standing committee on economic and investment policy. He noted that he had already discussed the situation with representatives of the city’s Department of Culture, but they, too, do not yet know how the issue of funding will be resolved after the summer ends.
