Almost 1700 tons of liquefied gas burned in Izmail district due to Russian shelling. The air pollution caused more than 124 million hryvnias in damage to the environment.
This was reported by the press service of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southwestern District.
As a result of enemy shelling on July 16, 2025, a large-scale fire broke out at a gas distribution station on the territory of the Staronekrasivsky village council of the Izmail district of Odesa region.
The flames destroyed 1698 tons of liquefied gas. As a result of the fire, almost 5900 tons of pollutants were released into the atmosphere, of which the vast majority - 5858 tons - was carbon dioxide.
According to the press service, it is estimated that the environmental damage caused by air pollution amounted to more than UAH 124 million. The information about the incident was transferred to the Operational Headquarters of the State Environmental Inspectorate to be included in the register of damage caused by Russian aggression.
On the night of August 6, Russian kamikaze drones attacked Odesa region, and a series of large explosions occurred in the region, particularly in the Izmail district.
Despite the operation of air defense systems, the gas infrastructure was damaged, causing a fire that was extinguished by rescuers around 07:25. According to the official, gas is currently being released from the gas system through production equipment destroyed by the fire.
The damage to the main gas pipeline left about 2,500 consumers without gas supply.
In May, experts from the State Ecological Inspectorate of the Southwestern District analyzed the consequences of the missile strike on Odesa by the Russians on the evening of April 22 and estimated the damage at over UAH 1.2 million.
According to the inspection, the total amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere was about 400 tons.
Over the past year, Ukraine has suffered large-scale losses due to Russian shelling of ports in Odesa region, estimated at more than $1.5 billion. Since August last year, attacks on the port infrastructure of Greater Odesa have caused serious damage, including the destruction of port facilities and the destruction of raw materials such as sunflower oil and grain stored in the ports.
