In Odesa region, approximately 15,600-16,000 applicants have registered to take the National Multisubject Test (NMT), which is the same as last year.
Professor Andriy Krasnozhon, rector of the South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K.D. Ushynsky, told Intent.Insight.
According to the head of the university, it is not yet known how many of these applicants are abroad or plan to enter other universities in Odesa region - universities do not have such detailed statistics.
"According to the official information from the Ministry of Education, today we are not inferior in the number of applicants compared to last year. We will see how this will affect the actual admission campaign when the first results are available, approximately in the second half of July," the rector said.
He also reminded that the NMT is a relatively new testing format that has become a partial replacement for both entrance and final exams in schools. The current format of admission, in particular through the National Multisubject Test, actually eliminates corruption risks, as everything is decided by competitive selection based on the results of the NMT.
"Now everything depends not on a 'different view' but on the points an applicant scores during the test. The higher the score, the better the chances of getting into a prestigious university. For example, with a score of 200 out of 200, you can apply for admission to the country's strongest universities," the rector explained.
At the same time, he emphasized that even with the highest scores, an applicant may deliberately choose a less popular or regional university due to personal circumstances, a desire to stay in their hometown, or to study with a particular teacher. In this case, a high score also gives a significant advantage.
"This system creates healthy competition among applicants and creates real incentives to prepare for exams, fight for high scores, and build an educational trajectory in an honest and transparent way," the university head added.
The NationalMulti-Subject Test (NMT) was first introduced in Ukraine in 2022 as a temporary replacement for the External Independent Testing (EIT) due to the full-scale war. It was developed to simplify the admission process in a secure environment - the NMT is taken online at special centers, lasts about 2 hours, and covers three main subjects (in 2022-2024, it was Ukrainian language, mathematics, and history of Ukraine).
