Mykolaiv has attracted international support to restore the historic building of the Mykola Arkas Lyceum. The educational institution was destroyed by the enemy in 2022.

This was reported by the press service of the Mykolaiv City Council.

The mayor of Mykolaiv , Oleksandr Senkevych, met with representatives of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), who came to the city on an official visit. During the meeting, they discussed the reconstruction of the Mykola Arkas Lyceum, which was partially destroyed during a Russian missile attack.

The meeting took place at the office of the territorial community restoration and development, where they discussed the prospects for restoring the educational institution, which is an important historical monument.

We want not only to restore the lyceum, but also to preserve its authentic appearance. I am grateful to UNOPS and the Kingdom of Denmark for helping us to do this," said Mr. Senkevych.

During the meeting, the parties discussed problematic issues that may arise during the restoration of the facility, as well as the steps that need to be taken to start work today.

According to the mayor, the restoration of the lyceum is one of the main positions of the city authorities and it is important that the work meets the standards of transparency. The mayor expressed his gratitude to the partners for their support in this difficult time.

Denmark wanted to restore the Mykola Arkas Lyceum, which was destroyed by a missile attack by the Russian occupation army, back in 2023. It was supposed to be done at the expense of an international partner.

On the night of November 1, 2022, the Russian military fired four S-300 missiles at Mykolaiv. As a result of this shelling, the Mykolaiv Lyceum named after Mykola Arkas, a building built in 1892, was heavily damaged and is considered a historical and architectural landmark of the city.

In 2023, Mykolaiv region was among the "leaders" in terms of damage to educational institutions. 246 facilities were damaged, and 33 were completely destroyed.

The city is also in the process of developing a new General Plan for the city, which should become the strategic basis for development for the next 30 years or more. The new document will define the use of the territories, which will allow the city to develop, build new housing, including for those affected by the war, develop infrastructure, production facilities and green areas.
