The Arabat Spit area in the Kherson region is under occupation. Local residents have noticed suspicious sea pollution and a characteristic pungent odor similar to oil products.
On social media and telegram channels, people report darkening of the water and a film on the surface that resembles fuel oil emissions.
It is speculated that this may be the result of the Russian tanker accident last year. However, the Kerch Strait and the Arabat Spit are at a considerable distance from each other. The Kerch Strait connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, and the Arabat Spit is a sand spit that separates the Sivash Bay from the Sea of Azov.
However, the exact cause of the pollution is currently difficult to determine. The enemy authorities themselves neither comment on nor deny any information.
The consequences of such incidents can be long-lasting - fuel oil settles on the bottom, poisons marine life, and pollutes coastal areas. There is also no control by independent experts. After all, the occupation authorities keep silent about any record of environmental damage, particularly in the Kherson region, and do not allow journalists to visit.
The Russian occupation administration once again demonstrates complete indifference to human life and the preservation of the ecosystem of southern Ukraine.
For example, recently a dead white-sided dolphin was found on 33 km of sandy spoil in the Tuzly Estuaries National Park.
Also, the Russian authorities are trying to conceal the true scale of the environmental disaster after the fuel oil leak in the Kerch Strait, instead of solving the problem and informing the public.
