This monument commemorates the feat of the residents of Bashtanka who stopped a convoy of more than 300 pieces of equipment of the Russian army on March 1, 2022. The unveiling of the monument was attended by the families of the victims, local residents, the military and government officials. A priest served a prayer service for peace and the fallen defenders. The attendees honored their memory with a minute of silence and laid flowers at the monument.

On the same day, the Bashtanka City House of Culture hosted a celebration in honor of those who stood up to defend the city three years ago. For their dedication and contribution to the defense, the teams of the hospital, the State Emergency Service, power engineers, utility workers, volunteers and others were awarded honorary letters of commendation.

"Bashtanka survived thanks to the unity, courage and dedication of our people. Everyone contributed to the defense of the city, and today we thank everyone who brought and continues to bring the victory closer," the statement said.

What is known about the fighting in Bashtanka

In March 2022, the town of Bashtanka in Mykolaiv region became the scene of important events in the confrontation with Russian aggression. On March 1, a column of Russian armored vehicles, numbering more than 300 units, approached the town. Thanks to the prompt actions of local residents who delayed the column's movement, the defenders of Bashtanka were able to organize a defense. The territorial defense forces, a company guarding the military registration and enlistment office, and hunters armed with small arms and Molotov cocktails, together with Ukrainian aviation, stopped the enemy's advance.

On March 13, Russian troops conducted an air strike on Bashtanka, damaging residential buildings and the town's infrastructure. There were no civilian casualties. On March 22, Russian troops were pushed back from the territory of the Bashtanka community.

Meanwhile, in Mykolaiv, on the third attempt and at a reduced price, they are trying to dismantle the Russian inscription and the Soviet star on the memorial complex in honor of the 68th Olshan paratroopers. The first and second tenders to find a contractor failed.
