Arsonist of military vehicles sentenced to 5 years in Odesa

A 22-year-old Odesa resident was sentenced to 5 years in prison for setting fire to cars belonging to the Ukrainian military. The sentence was passed by the court with the support of prosecutors.

According to the investigation, the man conspired with a representative of the aggressor state via Telegram. He was offered money for setting fire to Ukrainian Armed Forces vehicles or vehicles with the symbols of Ukrainian military formations.

The arsonist acted according to the instructions: first, he took photos of the selected cars, waited for "permission" to set them on fire, and then poured incendiary mixture on the cars, set them on fire, and filmed the process. He sent the recordings to the customer as proof of the completed "task". As a result of his actions, three vehicles used by Ukrainian defenders were destroyed. The total amount of damage is over 500 thousand hryvnias.

The man was detained in September 2024. He was in custody until the verdict was announced. During the trial, he pleaded guilty and repented. The court found him guilty under Part 1 of Article 114-1 and Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - obstruction of the lawful activities of the Armed Forces and intentional destruction of property. He will spend 5 years behind bars. The pre-trial investigation was conducted by investigators of the SBU Office in Odesa region.

Earlier, a man in Odesa set fire to a military man's apartment. The court ruled to take the suspect into custody with an alternative to bail. Investigative actions aimed at clarifying all the circumstances of the offense are under way. Procedural guidance in criminal proceedings. The man faces up to 10 years in prison.

At the end of December last year, an Odesa resident was sentenced to five years in prison for setting fire to two post offices. The young man received an offer from a stranger via a messenger to set fire to the postal buildings for a monetary reward. Following the coordinator's instructions, he purchased the necessary tools for committing the crimes during the day, and at night he set fire to the two facilities by smashing the windows with a stone and pouring flammable liquid on them. The perpetrator filmed the result of his actions and sent it to the customer for a report," saidOleh Zoshchuk, head of the investigation department of the territorial police unit. One fire went out on its own without spreading beyond the window, and the second fire was extinguished by security personnel who responded to the alarm. In addition to the window, the fire damaged the facade and walls inside the building.
