Odesa resident convicted of setting fire to two post offices

An Odesa resident was sentenced to five years and two months in prison for setting fire to two post offices in the Kyiv district of the city.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Oblast.

According to law enforcement, at the end of December last year, an attacker set fire to two post offices in the Kyiv district of Odesa overnight. No one was injured as a result of his illegal actions.

After receiving reports of the fires, operatives identified the arsonist in a few hours. It was a 22-year-old resident of the city who was on probation for theft.

"During the pre-trial investigation, we found out that the young man received an offer from a stranger via messenger to set fire to postal buildings for a monetary reward. Following the coordinator's instructions, he purchased the necessary tools for committing crimes during the day, and at night he set fire to two objects by breaking the windows with a stone and pouring flammable liquid on them. The perpetrator filmed the result of his actions and sent it to the customer for a report," said Oleh Zoshchuk, head of the investigation department of the territorial police unit.

One fire went out on its own without spreading beyond the window, and the second fire was extinguished by security personnel who responded to the alarm. In addition to the window, the fire damaged the facade and walls inside the building.

According to the results of the investigators' examinations, the amount of damage caused to the victims amounted to more than 43 thousand hryvnias.

Thepolice charged the man under Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - completed attempted intentional damage to property and intentional damage to property committed by arson, by prior conspiracy. After completion of the pre-trial investigation, which was conducted under the supervision of the Kyiv District Prosecutor's Office of Odesa, the indictment was sent to court.

The materials regarding the customer of the crimes were separated into a separate criminal proceeding.
