Mass events for City Day have been canceled in Mykolaiv

No large-scale events will be held in Mykolaiv this year to mark City Day. City officials have decided to cancel events involving large gatherings of people due to Russian military activity and new threats from the air.

Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych announced this at a staff meeting, according to MykVisti.

According to the mayor, Mykolaiv initially considered organizing a festive program, but the security situation forced a reevaluation of those plans. City officials consulted with military officials and subsequently decided not to create additional risk for residents.

Senkevich emphasized that this is not a formal ban on such events, but rather a conscious decision by the city not to gather large numbers of people in one place.

He cited the intensification of drone attacks as one of the reasons for this decision. According to the mayor, the Russians are using new types of drones that could pose a particular danger to Mykolaiv.

In particular, Senkevich described a recent attack on a critical infrastructure facility using “Banderole”-type drones. He said these drones were flying over the river at a very low altitude, which made it impossible to detect them in time.

The mayor also noted that such drones can be launched from various directions, including from the Kinburn Spit.

At the same time, city officials want to ensure that Mykolaiv Day does not become just another ordinary day. Instead of large-scale events, they plan to prepare the city for the holiday by sprucing up the streets, stepping up cleanup efforts, and adding city symbols.

Businesses, institutions, and organizations are encouraged to display Ukrainian flags and Mykolaiv flags. Festive symbols are also planned to be displayed on public transportation.

Small-scale festive initiatives by residents are also encouraged. According to Senkevich, people can organize gatherings in their courtyards or other local events where there are no large crowds. This format, he said, can be modeled after Odesa’s experience.

The mayor also noted that the authorities had hoped for an improvement in the security situation following recent negotiations. However, he said, there is currently no reason to change their approach.
